Join us for a conversation with artist Indira Freitas Johnson and curator Jeff Stevenson as they explore and discuss the themes of the exhibition Rebirth: Stories of Transformation and Renewal, and the Ten Thousand Ripples project installations at theNate.

Rebirth: Stories of Transformation and Renewal explores the intricate tapestry of life's perpetual cycles—birth, death, rebirth and renewal. It traverses the dual landscapes of Chicago and Mumbai, weaving a narrative that explores spirituality, nonviolence, community engagement, and the profound significance found within life's discarded fragments.

“My fascination with the process of aging is evident in the textures of the materials I use, rusted objects, bark, weathered wood, and bones. Creative repurposing opens possibilities of seeing the world in different ways, with different points of view. If we can change one thing into another, what else can we change?” -- Indira Johnson

Taking totally unrelated objects, and combining them to birth new associations, narratives, and meanings gives them a renewed energy and sensibility that functions physically as well as spiritually, reinforcing the idea of the sacredness of everyday life. They serve as a testament to the intricate interplay between the tangible and intangible, inviting contemplation on the essence of existence itself.

Through a vast and diverse array of sculptural and mixed media works, Rebirth: Stories of Transformation and Renewal invites viewers to reflect upon their own journeys within the ceaseless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth and stands as a testament to the universal human experience, urging reflection and engagement with the profound rhythms of existence.
